Snapdeal to announce Jacqueline Fernandez as brand ambassador
Sri Lanka’s very own Bollywood up-and-comer Jacqueline Fernandez is being rumoured as the soon-to-be-announced brand ambassador for Indian online shop Snapdeal.com, according to a December 26 report by gossip website Bollywood Hungama.
For those not in the know, Snapdeal.com is India’s largest online and mobile shopping venue, with a mid-2014 valuation of US$ 1 billion. Starting off as Groupon clone in 2010, the website soon exiting this niche in favour of the larger, online sales sector. It was also recently revealed that as much as 20 per cent of its sales were through its m-commerce platform.
Meanwhile, Ms. Fernandez has also been doing very well according to India’s Financial Express, having starred in a string of Bollywood hits, with her most recent film “Kick” alone having grossed INR 231.85 crores (approximately LKR 4.8 billion). Read the Financial Express report here.
More important for our Island nation, this much-anticipated announcement by Snapdeal.com also begs the question, does this move by India’s biggest online shop (boasting some 4 million plus products) also herald its future plans for the Sri Lankan market, where it could follow in the market-dominating footsteps of other international players like ikman.lk and carmudi.lk, just to name a few.
