introduces carpooling for convenience

Homegrown start-up has started facilitating carpool (ride-share) services during the Avurudu season, signalling that this new offering can help reduce transportation costs associated with shopping or traveling home to celebrate the festive season.

According to the announcement, “to make use of this service, all a person has to do is log into the website, on one’s computer, tablet or mobile phone, and then indicate your travel destination, date and time, and whether one is offering a ride or needing a ride. The system matches all the postings and informs each party of the possible matches. The riders and the drivers can then decide with whom they would share a ride”.

Though new in Sri Lanka, carpooling services have been in existence in the US and Europe as far back as the mid 20th century. In 2009, carpooling represented 43.5% of all trips in the United States and 10% of commute trips.
